From Irish railroad camps to a Civil War battlefield, the story of Kennesaw, Georgia.
In short: Before it was a suburban hub northwest of Atlanta, Kennesaw was a rugged construction camp for Irish railroad workers known as Big Shanty. Today, the city balances its industrial roots with a deep commitment to preserving the dramatic Civil War history that unfolded across its landscape and mountain peaks.
The city of Kennesaw, located in Cobb County, traces its origins to the 1830s when the Georgia legislature authorized a rail line through the region. As the Western and Atlantic Railroad was constructed, shanty towns emerged to house laborers, eventually earning the area the name Big Shanty. The name was derived from the phrase 'the big grade to the shanties,' which referred to the local topography near a large spring. It was not until 1887 that the community was officially incorporated as Kennesaw, a name taken from the nearby mountain.
The mountain itself, which reaches an elevation of 1,808 feet, is the highest point in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Its name is believed to come from the Cherokee word 'Ganisahv,' meaning burial ground or cemetery. During the Civil War, the area became a focal point of conflict, serving as a staging ground for the 1862 Great Locomotive Chase and the site of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. Today, the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park preserves these historic grounds, while the city maintains five historic districts and a 1908 railroad depot repurposed as a community museum.
Modern Kennesaw has evolved into a center for heritage tourism and education. The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History, a Smithsonian Institution affiliate, anchors the city's efforts to interpret its past. Beyond its historical identity, the city has grown into a significant suburban municipality. According to the 2020 census, the population reached 33,036, reflecting a 10.9% increase over the previous decade. As a Certified Local Government, Kennesaw continues to manage its growth while honoring the complex narrative of its origins, from the early railroad camps to its designation as a Preserve America Community.
