The Bronze Age princes who controlled Europe's first global trade routes
In short: Over 4,000 years ago, a sophisticated elite emerged in Central Europe. This video explores how these rulers built wealth by monopolizing metal production and securing the lucrative Amber Road.
The Únětice Culture was defined by 'great princes' who consolidated power by controlling the production of copper and tin. By mastering these metals, they created vast quantities of bronze, which served as the foundation for their immense wealth and military might.
Beyond metal, these rulers facilitated a massive trade network known as the Amber Road, transporting Baltic amber to civilizations in the Near East. Their status was marked by grand burials beneath enormous barrows containing gold weapons and jewelry. They also maintained standing armies of axe-wielding warriors and produced the Nebra Sky Disc, the world's oldest depiction of astronomical phenomena.
