In short: Singer, novelist, and perennial political candidate Kinky Friedman lived a life defined by irreverent humor and social commentary. From leading a band called The Texas Jewboys to running for governor on a platform of legalizing marijuana and border reform, Friedman challenged conventions while styling himself after classic American satirists.

Born in Chicago in 1944 to Russian Jewish parents, Richard Samet Friedman eventually settled at his family's Echo Hill Ranch in Texas. His eclectic career began in music, where he gained cult fame in the 1970s with Kinky Friedman and The Texas Jewboys. The band’s name, which his father found hostile, was a deliberate provocation. His songs often blended raucous humor with biting social critique, covering topics from the Holocaust to feminism and the Charles Whitman sniper attack. His reputation for controversy was solidified after a 1973 concert in Buffalo ended in a brawl, leading the National Organization for Women to award him their Male Chauvinist Pig Award—an honor he accepted with pride.

By the 1980s, Friedman pivoted to writing detective novels, creating a fictionalized version of himself who solved crimes in New York City. These books, written in a style reminiscent of Raymond Chandler, featured recurring characters based on real-life friends, including his road manager Dylan Ferrero and investigator Steven Rambam. His writing career was as prolific as his musical one, eventually encompassing travelogues, etiquette guides, and collections of his columns for Texas Monthly.

Friedman’s political ambitions were equally colorful. In 2006, he ran as an independent for governor of Texas, securing 12.6% of the vote. His platform was a mix of unconventional ideas, including the 'dewussification' of Texas, the legalization of marijuana, and a plan to increase National Guard presence at the border. Despite his defeat, he remained a public figure until his death in 2024 at age 79. His legacy remains a complex tapestry of satire, music, and a persistent, often humorous, engagement with the social and political issues of his time.
