In short: Krishna Swaminathan rose from a student topping mountain courses to becoming the 27th Chief of the Naval Staff. His career reflects a trajectory of high-stakes leadership, spanning aircraft carriers, electronic warfare, and national defense during global crises.

Born in Bangalore to parents who were both teachers, Krishna Swaminathan’s path into military leadership began at Sainik School, Vijayapura. While there, he demonstrated early aptitude for rigorous training by topping a Himalayan Mountaineering Institute course designed for young leaders. This foundation of physical and mental endurance preceded his entry into the National Defence Academy in Pune as part of the 70th course, where he balanced academic success with sports before commissioning into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987.

Swaminathan’s early career was defined by technical specialization. He served as a Missile Gunnery Officer and later specialized in Communication and Electronic Warfare after attending the Long C course at Signal School, Kochi. This expertise saw him serve as an Electronic Warfare Officer on the aircraft carrier INS Viraat and a Signal Communications Officer on the Khukri-class corvette INS Khukri. His leadership capabilities were further validated internationally when he attended the Advanced Command and Staff Course in Shrivenham, United Kingdom, where he was named the best international student.

His rise to flag rank involved commanding significant assets, including the guided missile destroyer INS Mysore and the flagship aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. As the second commanding officer of the Vikramaditya, he led the ship during the International Fleet Review 2016, where it was adjudged the Best Ship of the Western Fleet. He also played a pivotal role in institutional safety by helping raise the Indian Navy Safety Team (INST) and overseeing operational sea training for both the Navy and the Indian Coast Guard.

In recent years, Swaminathan has managed complex maritime challenges, including commanding the Western Fleet during the COVID-19 pandemic and serving as the Flag Officer Defence Advisory Group during Cyclone Tauktae.
