A Kannada epic retells the Mahabharata war from the perspective of the Kaurava king
In short: The 2019 film Kurukshetra reimagines the legendary Sanskrit epic through the eyes of Duryodhana. Produced by Munirathna and directed by Naganna, this ambitious production required over 230 days of filming. It stands as a significant milestone in Kannada cinema, achieving one of the industry's largest opening days and widest theatrical releases.
Based on the epic poem Gadhayuddha by Ranna, the film shifts the traditional focus of the Mahabharata war. Instead of the Pandavas, the narrative centers on the Kaurava king, Duryodhana. The story follows the aftermath of a fateful gamble that forces the Pandavas into years of exile, eventually leading to the dynastic conflict known as the Kurukshetra War. To bring this massive scale to life, the production team utilized Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad for a major portion of the shooting.
The film's journey to the screen was complex, involving multiple delays and strategic scheduling. Initially slated for an April 2019 release to coincide with the festival of Ugadi, the date was postponed due to the involvement of actor Nikhil Kumar in the 2019 Indian general elections, as election regulations prohibited candidate promotion. Producer Munirathna also cited the need for extensive graphics work on the 2D and 3D versions. Ultimately, the film premiered on 9 August 2019, timed to coincide with the Varamahalakshmi Vrata festival.
Commercially, the project was a success, completing 100 days in several centers. It secured a wide release across more than 1,000 screens and generated approximately ₹30 crore in its first week. Critical reception was mixed; while some reviewers praised the film as a nostalgic return to mythological cinema and lauded the performance of lead actor Darshan, others critiqued the pacing, dialogue, and the film's departure from the respectful distance typically afforded to epic characters. Despite these varied opinions, the film remains a notable example of large-scale regional filmmaking, supported by significant investments in satellite rights and audio distribution.
