In short: Lani Cayetano began her public life by building a women's rights organization from just 1,300 members. Today, she serves as the mayor of Taguig, a role that has seen significant territorial expansion and complex legal challenges involving neighboring cities.

Born Maria Laarni Clariño Lopez on December 11, 1981, Cayetano has built a multifaceted political career in the Philippines. Her rise was marked by early leadership roles, such as founding the Progressive Ladies' League of the Philippines at age 22. This organization, which originally started with 1,300 members, has grown to include more than 16,000 members focused on women's welfare. Additionally, she established the Angat Lahat Multi-Purpose Cooperative at age 23 to provide alternative income sources. She also served as the youngest President of the Zonta Club of Pateros and Taguig between 2008 and 2010.

Cayetano's legislative and executive experience includes serving as the first female representative of Taguig-Pateros's 1st district in 2007. At age 28, she became the first female Mayor of Taguig, winning her initial term in 2010 by a slim margin of 2,420 votes. This victory was contested by former Supreme Court Associate Justice Dante Tiñga, but the electoral protest was eventually dismissed. In 2017, President Rodrigo Duterte selected her for the Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council. Furthermore, she achieved recognition from the United Nations Associations of the Philippines for her work in government service.

Her tenure has been defined by significant shifts in the city's geography. Following a 2023 Supreme Court ruling regarding a decades-long boundary dispute, the Embo barangays transferred from Makati to Taguig, contributing to the city's territorial expansion. Despite these shifts, her leadership has faced legal scrutiny, including a 2024 lawsuit regarding an incident at Makati Park and Garden, though those charges were dismissed due to lack of evidence. Her political career also includes serving as the representative for Taguig's 2nd District from 2019 to 2022. She was also re-elected to her mayoral position in 2025.
