From student politician to international fugitive: the rise of the Bishnoi gang leader
In short: Born Balkaran Brar, the man known as Lawrence Bishnoi has evolved from a university activist into the kingpin of a sprawling criminal syndicate. Despite years of incarceration, he allegedly directs international operations, ranging from targeted assassinations to extortion, while maintaining a complex, ascetic lifestyle behind high-security prison walls.
Born in 1993 in the village of Dutarawali, Punjab, Lawrence Bishnoi adopted his current name during his school years. His path to notoriety began in 2011 at Panjab University, where he became deeply involved in student politics. This period marked the start of his criminal trajectory, with multiple FIRs filed against him for offenses including attempted murder and assault. By 2013, after graduating with an LL.B., his activities reportedly escalated to include orchestrating murders of political rivals and expanding into liquor dealing.
Bishnoi’s influence has persisted despite his imprisonment. Since 2014, he has spent significant time in custody, including transfers to Tihar Jail and Sabarmati Central Jail. Authorities allege he continues to command his syndicate—which reportedly boasts over 800 members across five Indian states—using illicit communication methods like VoIP. His gang has claimed responsibility for high-profile killings, including the 2022 assassination of singer Sidhu Moose Wala and the 2023 murder of Karni Sena president Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi.
The syndicate’s reach now spans international borders, drawing scrutiny from the FBI and Canadian authorities. In July 2026, U.S. prosecutors unsealed an indictment alleging Bishnoi directed the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. Furthermore, reports have linked the gang to corruption within Cricket Canada and a wave of extortions targeting the South Asian diaspora. While Bishnoi denies these allegations, Canada officially designated his network as a terrorist entity in September 2025. Amidst these accusations, Bishnoi maintains a disciplined, ascetic routine in prison, meditating and fasting regularly, a stark contrast to the violent operations attributed to his organization.
