One horror franchise, five different realities
In short: The Halloween film series is not a single linear story. Instead, it exists across five distinct continuities, each with its own rules, timelines, and character fates. Depending on which version you watch, the same icons might be dead, alive, or never even existed in that universe.
The Halloween franchise is fractured into five primary timelines. Continuity A covers the original 1978–1981 era, while Continuity B (the Thorn Timeline) spans 1978–1995. Continuity C follows the Dimension Films era (1978–1981 and 1998–2002), Continuity D represents the 2007–2009 remake timeline, and Continuity E tracks the modern Universal/Blumhouse era from 2018 to 2022. Notably, Halloween III: Season of the Witch stands entirely alone, possessing no connection to any other film in the series.
These divergent paths create wildly different outcomes for the same characters. For example, the fate of Ben Tramer varies significantly. In the original and H2O timelines, he is deceased, but in the remake and 2018 timelines, he is alive. In the 2018 timeline, he even survived the events of 1978 to have a son and a grandson. Similarly, the character of Annie Brackett experiences different levels of trauma; in the original film, she is killed quickly, but in the Rob Zombie reboot, she survives a brutal attack only to be murdered again in the sequel.
This complexity allows the franchise to reinvent its mythology while maintaining its core iconography. While some characters, like Laurie Strode, appear across almost every timeline, their relationships and the specific mechanics of their survival shift based on the specific continuity rules. This multi-layered structure ensures that while the mask remains a constant, the history behind it is constantly being rewritten.
