The complex histories and hidden identities of the NCIS: Los Angeles team
In short: Beyond the high-stakes investigations of the Office of Special Projects lie deeply personal stories. From agents navigating childhood trauma and repressed memories to specialists managing the psychological health of the team, the characters of NCIS: Los Angeles carry burdens that shape their professional lives and undercover expertise.
At the center of the series is Special Agent in Charge Grisha "G." Callen, a specialist in deep undercover work. His identity is marked by a fragmented past; between the ages of five and eighteen, he lived in thirty-seven different foster homes, sometimes moving every few days. These experiences included witnessing his mother's assassination when he was four and enduring physical abuse from a foster father. Callen's professional versatility is bolstered by his linguistic skills, as he is fluent in at least six languages, including Spanish, Polish, Russian, German, Italian, and French, and can also read Arabic.
The team's operational psychologist, Dr. Nate Getz, holds both a master's and a Ph.D. in psychology. His role involves observing surveillance tapes, conducting interrogations to create psychological profiles, and performing periodic mental health evaluations for the OSP personnel. While he has received training in fieldcraft and hand-to-hand combat, his desire to become a field agent was discouraged by the team due to his perceived lack of field skills. During his service, he moved to the Middle East to probe a Yemeni Islamic militant faction.
Junior Field Agent Kensi Blye brings a diverse background to the Los Angeles office. Born in San Diego on July 29, 1982, she grew up in a U.S. Marine Corps family. Her early life was marked by significant hardship; after her father was murdered, she spent nearly a year living on the streets. A Cornell University graduate with a degree in Politics and International Studies, Blye joined NCIS in August 2006. She is noted for her encyclopedic knowledge, earning her the nickname "Wikipedia," and is fluent in Portuguese, French, Spanish, and English, and can also use Morse code and lip-reading.
