The Ghostface identity is a mask that anyone in Woodsboro can wear to kill
In short: The Scream franchise revolves around a succession of murderers adopting the Father Death costume to terrorize Sidney Prescott. While the identity began with Billy Loomis and Stu Macher, the mantle has been passed through generations of killers, each using the disguise to conceal their true motives and taunt their victims.
The Ghostface persona is a generic Halloween costume, officially dubbed Father Death, which allows multiple individuals to assume the role across the seven films. This anonymity is bolstered by a voice changer, operated by actor Roger L. Jackson. Jackson was originally hired as a temporary voice during local casting in Santa Rosa, California, but director Wes Craven retained him because he imbued the character with a distinct, evil malevolence. To maintain the illusion of a singular, menacing entity, the production team intentionally kept Jackson separated from the cast throughout filming.
The series began in 1996 with Billy Loomis and Stu Macher, who orchestrated a spree to frame Sidney Prescott's father for the murder of Maureen Prescott. Maureen's death serves as the foundational trauma for the franchise; her past affairs with men like Hank Loomis and Cotton Weary, and her secret history as an actress named Rina Reynolds, created a web of resentment. Roman Bridger, revealed in the third film to be Maureen's son from a previous trauma, admitted to manipulating Billy into the initial killings. This established a pattern where the Ghostface identity is used to settle personal vendettas.
As the franchise progressed, the identity was adopted by various figures, including Nancy Loomis, Mickey Altieri, Jill Roberts, and the family of Richie Kirsch. By the sixth film, the series shifted focus to the Core Four—Sam and Tara Carpenter and twins Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin. In the seventh film, the killers include Sidney's neighbor Jessica Bowden, a mental institution supervisor named Marco Davis, and a patient named Karl Gibbs. The killers' identities and motivations are consistently withheld until the final act, where they confront the protagonist to explain their reasoning, often involving complex schemes to manipulate or destroy Sidney's life.
