The marathon baseball game that lasted three days and forced players to burn benches
In short: In 1981, a minor league match between the Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings stretched across 33 innings and eight hours of play. As temperatures plummeted, exhausted athletes resorted to burning wooden stadium furniture to stay warm, while the game itself became a surreal test of human endurance.
The contest began on April 18, 1981, at McCoy Stadium in Rhode Island. Due to an oversight in the umpire's rule book regarding mandatory curfews, the game continued well past the standard cutoff time. By the early hours of Easter morning, players were delirious from fatigue. Conditions were brutal; the cold was so intense that participants incinerated broken bats and stadium benches to generate heat, and the clubhouses eventually ran out of food. It was not until 4:07 a.m. that the league president intervened to halt play after 32 innings.
The final inning was not completed until June 23, 1981, drawing a sellout crowd of 5,746 spectators and global media attention, partly because major league players were on strike at the time. Pawtucket secured a 3–2 victory when Dave Koza knocked in the deciding run. The game set numerous professional records, including the longest duration for a single match at eight hours and 25 minutes, and saw 27 future or former major league players participate, including future Hall of Famers Wade Boggs and Cal Ripken Jr.
The legacy of this event persisted long after the final out. In 2006, the team celebrated the 25th anniversary of the game, and in 2025, a time capsule buried at the stadium was unearthed, containing the original scorecard and signed baseballs. The game remains a singular curiosity in sports history, defined as much by its bizarre logistical failures—such as the umpire's nephew falling asleep in the stands and the police being called to check on the status of the match—as by the athletic performance of those involved.
