The fried chicken empire that doubled as a methamphetamine distribution network
In short: In the American Southwest, Los Pollos Hermanos is a beloved regional chain. However, behind the crispy, fried exterior of this fictional brand lies a sophisticated logistics operation. The company's infrastructure was actually utilized to process and ship methamphetamine, using delivery trucks to move drugs across the Mexico–United States border.
In the television universe of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Los Pollos Hermanos serves as a highly successful front for Gus Fring’s illegal operations. Founded in Mexico by Chilean business partners Gus Fring and Max Arciniega, the chain eventually expanded to 14 locations throughout the American Southwest. An unverified story from a fictional commercial even suggests the brand's recipes were inspired by the cooking of Gus's uncles.
The scale of the operation was bolstered by the company's status as a subsidiary of Madrigal Electromotive GmbH, a fictional German shipping conglomerate. Fring used this connection to expand both his legal and illegal reach. The logistics were so seamless that the chain's delivery trucks were used to move drugs across the border, even as Fring worked to keep the actual restaurant storefronts untainted by the drug trade. The brand's visual identity was established in 2008 by Mexican artist Humberto Puentes-Segura.
The brand's influence has extended far beyond the screen into real-world commerce. The Albuquerque filming location, a Twisters restaurant, reported a 10% revenue increase in 2013 due to the show's popularity. The brand has also manifested as a series of global pop-up restaurants, appearing in cities like New York, Los Angeles, Austin, and even Sydney, Australia. In 2017, Netflix even hosted themed dining events in Rome and Milan to promote the franchise's reach. Beyond these events, the brand has appeared in unexpected places, such as the food court at the University of Aberdeen. In 2018, Postmates even provided a limited-time delivery service for the chain in Los Angeles and New York City.
