In short: What began as a non-commercial debut in 1994 transformed into a global phenomenon. Through strategic covers and provocative themes, the band climbed the Billboard charts, moving from underground rock to international success across Europe and North America.

The band's recording history began in earnest in 1994 with the release of Portrait of an American Family. While it did not find immediate commercial success, it eventually earned a gold certification from the RIAA for shipments exceeding 500,000 copies. The band's momentum shifted significantly with the 1995 EP Smells Like Children, a successful release driven by their cover of the Eurythmics' 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)'. This EP sold more than one million copies in the United States alone.

The mid-to-late 1990s marked a period of significant commercial and critical heights. Upon its 1996 debut, Antichrist Superstar climbed to the third spot on the Billboard 200, moving more than 1.9 million units in the US and surpassing seven million copies globally. This was followed by the 1998 album Mechanical Animals, which achieved number one on the Billboard 200 and topped charts in both Canada and Australia.

The band's commercial trajectory saw varied results in different markets. For instance, the 2003 album The Golden Age of Grotesque saw modest sales in the US, debuting with 118,000 copies and reaching 526,000 copies by November 2008. However, it was their most successful project internationally, peaking within the top five in most major European markets. After a long tenure with Interscope, which ended with the 2009 release of The High End of Low, the band transitioned to Cooking Vinyl for 2012's Born Villain.

Recent years have seen a continuation of their prolific output, including 2015's The Pale Emperor, which saw their highest first-week sales since 2007's Eat Me, Drink Me. Their most recent works include the 2024 release One Assassination Under God – Chapter 1 and its 2026 sequel, One Assassination Under God – Chapter 2.
