From failed fighter planes to saving over 7,800 lives in the sky
In short: Before becoming the world's leading authority on pilot escape systems, Martin-Baker was a struggling aircraft manufacturer. The death of a company founder during a test flight shifted their focus to survival technology, leading to the invention of the explosive ejection seat and a unique club for those who survived.
Founded in 1929 by James Martin and Captain Valentine Baker, the company initially focused on unconventional aircraft design. Their early projects, including the MB 1 and MB 2, were private ventures that failed to secure military adoption. The company's trajectory changed irrevocably in 1942 when Baker died while testing the MB 3 fighter prototype. This tragedy deeply affected Martin, who pivoted the firm's expertise toward pilot safety, specifically investigating how to help aircrew escape high-speed aircraft.
In 1944, the Ministry of Aircraft Production commissioned Martin-Baker to develop an ejection system. Because there was no existing data on how much upward g-force a human body could withstand, the team built a 16-foot tripod test rig. Experimental fitter Bernard Lynch performed the first live test in 1945, and by 1946, he successfully ejected from a Gloster Meteor. This pioneering work eventually led to the zero-zero ejection seat in 1961, capable of saving pilots at zero altitude and zero airspeed.
Today, the company remains a family-run business, managed by the twin sons of Sir James Martin since 1979. Their impact is tracked by the Ejection Tie Club, founded in 1957, which counts over 7,800 members as of 2026. While the company has saved thousands of lives, it has also faced scrutiny; in 2018, the firm pleaded guilty to health and safety breaches regarding a failure to warn the Royal Air Force about a technical issue with ejector seat bolts that contributed to a fatal 2011 accident.
The company's legacy is defined by its evolution from building experimental fighters to perfecting the mechanics of survival. Operating from its own airfield in Chalgrove, Martin-Baker continues to supply ejection seats to 93 air forces globally. Their work remains a critical component of modern aviation, balancing the extreme physical demands of high-speed escape with the ongoing responsibility of maintaining life-saving equipment.
