In short: After the catastrophic Battle of Ankara in 1402, the Ottoman realm fractured into a decade of civil war. Mehmed I emerged from this chaos to reunite the state, suppress populist uprisings, and consolidate power. Known as The Restorer, he rebuilt the empire from the ashes of his father's defeat.

Born around 1386, Mehmed I was the fourth son of Sultan Bayezid I. His path to the throne was forged in the Ottoman Interregnum, a brutal civil war between the sons of Bayezid following their father's capture by the Turko-Mongol conqueror Timur in 1402. While his brothers vied for control, Mehmed initially governed the Rûm Eyalet in central Anatolia. Through strategic maneuvering and military success, he eventually defeated his rivals, including his brother Musa at the Battle of Çamurlu, to become the sole ruler of a reunified empire by 1413.

Mehmed's reign was defined by the need to stabilize a traumatized population and reestablish central authority. He faced significant internal threats, most notably a populist religious movement led by the charismatic Sufi theologian Sheikh Bedreddin. Bedreddin’s movement, which sought to dissolve social and religious barriers, gained traction in both Europe and Anatolia before Mehmed’s grand vizier, Bayezid Pasha, captured and executed the leader in 1420. Simultaneously, Mehmed navigated complex diplomatic relations with the Byzantine Empire, often using marriage alliances and hostage exchanges to secure his borders and ensure a smooth succession for his son, Murad II.

Beyond his political and military achievements, Mehmed left a lasting cultural legacy in Bursa, the city where he was buried. He commissioned the Green Mosque, a structure celebrated for its intricate green glazed tiles, and established charitable institutions, including a school and a refectory for the poor. By the time of his death in 1421, Mehmed had successfully transitioned the Ottoman state from a fractured collection of territories back into a centralized power. His ability to restore order after the devastation of the Interregnum earned him the enduring title of the second founder of the Ottoman Sultanate.
