The legendary horse race that once stopped an entire nation
In short: Every November, Australia pauses for the Melbourne Cup. What began in 1861 as a modest contest for gold sovereigns has evolved into the world's richest two-mile handicap, a high-stakes spectacle of prestige, massive prize pools, and deep-seated sporting traditions.
Since its inaugural running on 7 November 1861, the Melbourne Cup has become a cornerstone of Australian culture. The event, held at Flemington Racecourse, is so significant that it has been a public holiday in much of Victoria since 1876. While the race was originally contested over two miles, the distance was adjusted to 3,200 metres in 1972 following Australia's transition to the metric system.
The race operates as a quality handicap, a mechanism designed to balance the field. Officials adjust the weight carried by jockeys and gear—using ballast where necessary—to account for a horse's age and previous successes. While older horses carry more weight, the rules have shifted from a pure handicap, which aimed for equal winning chances, to a formula that allows superior horses less severe penalties. The field is strictly limited to 24 starters for safety, a far cry from the 1890 record of 39 runners.
The scale of the event is immense. The 2023 prize pool reached A$8,410,000, with the winner taking home A$4.4 million alongside an 18-carat solid gold trophy. The prestige of the Cup is reflected in its history: the first winner, Archer, won a gold watch, while the modern trophy is hand-spun from 1.65 kg of gold. Beyond the track, the event's influence extends globally through trophy tours that visit communities across Australia and New Zealand.
