In short: Founded in 2018 by former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis, MeRA25 seeks to rewrite the European constitution. By blending left-wing economic theory with radical environmentalism, the party aims to dismantle existing financial structures. Despite their ambitious vision for a democratic future, they have struggled to secure a foothold in parliament.

MeRA25, or the European Realistic Disobedience Front, emerged in 2018 as a project spearheaded by Yanis Varoufakis. The party functions as the Greek arm of the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 (DiEM25), a transnational initiative that aims to replace current European treaties with a new democratic constitution by 2025. The name itself is a linguistic nod to this connection: in Greek, 'mera' means 'day', mirroring the Latin 'diem'.

The party’s platform is expansive, advocating for a 'European Green New Deal' to address what it terms a postmodern Great Depression. Its domestic agenda includes radical tax reform, the abolition of the Energy Exchange, and the socialization of key state institutions. Central to their economic strategy is the ODYSSEAS plan, a proposal intended to replace the 'Hercules' scheme for managing non-performing loans. By creating a public body to handle these debts, the party hopes to shield primary residences and small businesses from predatory banking practices and property auctions.

Despite these detailed policy proposals, MeRA25 has faced significant electoral hurdles. In the 2019 Greek parliamentary elections, the party secured nine seats with 3.44% of the vote. However, subsequent attempts to gain traction have been difficult. In the May 2023 elections, they failed to reach the 3% threshold required for parliamentary representation, and their vote share dipped further to 2.5% in the June 2023 snap election. Similarly, the party has struggled on the European stage, failing to elect representatives in both the 2019 and 2024 European Parliament elections.

Varoufakis has attributed these setbacks to a lack of a unified progressive front and has called for rigorous self-criticism within the party. Nevertheless, MeRA25 continues to promote its vision of European internationalism, social emancipation, and economic rationality, maintaining that a radical left-wing presence is essential for addressing contemporary crises, from energy dependency to the protection of refugee rights.
