The pilot who survived the Battle of Mogadishu
In short: In 1993, Michael Durant was the sole American survivor after his Black Hawk helicopter was shot down in Somalia. Held captive for 11 days, his harrowing experience became the basis for the film Black Hawk Down and a defining moment in modern military history.
During Operation Gothic Serpent on October 3, 1993, Durant was piloting the MH-60L Black Hawk known as "Super Six Four." After an RPG-7 struck the helicopter's tail, the aircraft crashed approximately one mile southwest of its target. The crash resulted in the deaths of Durant's crew—Bill Cleveland, Ray Frank, and Tommy Field—and left Durant with a crushed vertebra and a compound fracture of his left femur.
While Delta Force snipers Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart volunteered to protect the crash site, they were eventually overwhelmed and killed. Durant was the only American survivor of the crash, held captive by Somali forces for 11 days. After being held by Abdullahi "Firimbi" Hassan—a medical doctor and propaganda official for Somali General Mohamed Farrah Aidid—he was handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross.
After recovering at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, Durant returned to the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. Upon his 2001 retirement, he held the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 Black Hawk Master Aviator, boasting 3,700+ total flight hours, including 1,400+ using night vision goggles. Since then, he has authored books such as "In the Company of Heroes" and founded an engineering firm in Alabama.
Durant's later life has been marked by political involvement. He ran an unsuccessful campaign for the 2022 United States Senate election in Alabama as a Republican. His candidacy was notable for his controversial stances, including claims regarding the 2020 presidential election and his decision to decline participation in televised debates during the primary.
