From colonial outposts and missile explosions to the
In short: Middletown, New Jersey, is far more than a quiet suburb of New York City. Its history spans from 17th-century Dutch exploration and the American Revolution to a Cold War missile disaster and a famous, towering roadside clown that has become a local icon.
The township's origins trace back to 1609, when explorer Henry Hudson anchored along Sandy Hook Bay, describing the area as a pleasant land. While the region was originally home to the Lenape Navesink tribe, European settlement began to take shape in the mid-17th century. By 1693, the Navesink Patent had been divided into three distinct townships, including Middletown. The area saw significant movement during the English takeover of New Netherland in 1664, and later served as a site of conflict during the American Revolutionary War, when British forces retreated through the township toward Sandy Hook.
The 20th century brought both rapid industrial growth and sudden tragedy. The completion of a railroad junction in 1875 transformed the area from small fishing and agricultural villages into a burgeoning suburb. However, this growth was punctuated by the dangers of the Cold War; in May 1958, the explosion of several Nike Ajax missiles at Battery NY-53 in Chapel Hill resulted in ten deaths. The township also holds a somber place in modern history, having lost 37 residents during the September 11 terrorist attacks, the second-highest loss for any municipality behind New York City.
Today, Middletown is a prosperous community, frequently appearing on lists of the best places to live due to its low crime and strong schools. It maintains unique local character through landmarks like the 'Evil Clown of Middletown'—a massive sign from an old 'Food Circus' supermarket that has gained fame in pop culture. The landscape is a mix of residential hubs and significant infrastructure, including the Naval Weapons Station Earle, which features the world's second-longest ammunition loading pier, stretching 2.9 miles into the bay.
