Before he was a cultural icon, Mr. T coached a globetrotting gymnastics team
In short: In the mid-1980s, the star of The A-Team took his talents to Saturday morning television. Produced by Ruby-Spears, the animated series Mister T followed the actor as a coach to a young gymnastics squad, solving international mysteries while teaching moral lessons to viewers in a unique, live-action bookended format.
Airing on NBC from 1983 to 1985, the show spanned three seasons and a total of 30 episodes. The premise placed Mr. T at the helm of a travelling gymnastics team, accompanied by a diverse group of young athletes: Jeff, Woody, Robin, and Kim. Each member brought specific traits to the group, from Woody’s ambition to become a lawyer to Kim’s photographic memory. The team was rounded out by their bus driver, Ms. Priscilla Bisby, and a bulldog named Bulldozer, who sported a mohawk matching the coach's own.
The structure of the series was highly consistent. Every episode opened with a live-action introduction from Mr. T to set the stage, followed by an animated mystery that the team would resolve. The show concluded with a moral lesson delivered directly by the star. Notably, the series served as the debut voice-acting role for Phil LaMarr, who provided the voice for the character Woody Daniels.
While the original run concluded in 1985, the show found a second life through syndication and corporate acquisitions. In 1991, Turner Broadcasting System purchased the Ruby-Spears library, eventually bringing the series to networks like Cartoon Network and Boomerang. Following Turner’s 1996 merger with Time Warner, the rights shifted again and are currently held by Warner Bros. Discovery. The show’s legacy was further cemented in 2011 when the first season was released on DVD via the Warner Archive Collection.
