The bowler-hatted adventurer who walked through a magic door to change his life
In short: Mr Benn, a man in a dark suit and bowler hat, lived a quiet life at 52 Festive Road until he discovered a costume shop with a magical changing room. Each visit transported him into a new world, leaving him with a souvenir and a moral lesson to carry home.
Created by David McKee, Mr Benn first appeared in the 1967 book Mr Benn Red Knight. The character was inspired by McKee's own life on Festing Road in Putney, where he imagined a neighbor who could step into extraordinary adventures. The television series, narrated by Ray Brooks, aired on the BBC between 1971 and 1972. Despite its enduring popularity, McKee received only a one-off payment for the show, and much of the original production artwork was discarded in the 1970s.
The narrative structure of Mr Benn is remarkably consistent: he leaves his London home, visits a moustachioed shopkeeper, and dons a costume that dictates his next destination. Whether he becomes a knight, a convict, or a gladiator, his adventures always conclude with the shopkeeper returning him to the changing room. These stories often feature subtle connections to his daily life, such as the games played by children in the street outside his home.
While the original run consisted of thirteen episodes, the character has seen various revivals, including a 2001 book titled Mr Benn – Gladiator and a corresponding television special in 2005. The series has left a lasting cultural footprint, appearing in advertising campaigns for brands like R. White's Lemonade and MrPorter.com, and even earning a spot on a Royal Mail postage stamp in 2014. Despite several attempts to bring the character to the big screen, including a dormant project from the late 1990s, the legacy of the bowler-hatted traveler remains firmly rooted in his original animated and literary adventures.
