The superhero who is a radioactive spirit trapped inside a human husk
In short: Larry Trainor, the original Negative Man, is less a hero and more a victim of his own biology. After a test flight accident, he became a vessel for a radioactive entity. He must wear lead-lined bandages to protect others, while his consciousness often leaves his body to fight.
Created by Bob Haney, Arnold Drake, and Bruno Premiani, Negative Man debuted in My Greatest Adventure #80 in June 1963. The character’s origin is rooted in tragedy: while piloting an experimental jet, Trainor was exposed to a radioactive field in the stratosphere. This incident permanently altered his physiology, forcing him to rely on specialized bandages provided by the Chief to function in society. His power involves releasing an intangible, radioactive spirit from his body, leaving his physical form as a vulnerable, empty husk.
The nature of this entity has shifted across decades of continuity. Initially, the spirit was a separate, amoral being that could only exist outside Trainor for sixty seconds. Later iterations revealed the spirit to be the true essence of Trainor himself, while his physical body was merely a clone. The character’s evolution reached a complex peak with Rebis, a divine, intersex compound being formed by the fusion of Trainor, his physician Eleanor Poole, and the negative energy entity. Rebis, who possesses memories of all three beings, describes its existence through metaphors like Russian dolls and the ouroboros.
Beyond his shifting form, Trainor’s narrative explores themes of trauma and identity. In various adaptations, such as the live-action Doom Patrol series, the character grapples with his past as a 1960s Air Force pilot and his struggle to accept his sexuality. Whether he is being hunted by the Candlemaker or navigating trials in the extradimensional Negative Space, the character remains defined by the tension between his desire for normalcy and the volatile, radioactive power he carries. Even when granted the ability to experience a normal human lifecycle during his unconscious states, Trainor consistently chooses to remain connected to his spirit to continue helping others.
