How a St. Louis animal feed mill became a global pet food powerhouse
In short: Founded in 1893 to feed farm animals, Purina evolved into a pet care titan through strategic mergers and aggressive marketing. Today, it stands as a dominant force in the global pet food industry, constantly reshaping its supply chain and product portfolio to meet the shifting demands of modern pet owners.
The company originated in 1894 when William H. Danforth co-founded Purina Mills in St. Louis, Missouri, initially focusing on livestock feed. By 1902, it was renamed Ralston Purina. A pivotal transformation occurred in December 2001, when the Swiss corporation Nestlé acquired Ralston Purina for $10.3 billion, merging it with its existing Friskies PetCare business. This consolidation created a juggernaut that, by 2006, held 32 percent of the global pet food market share.
Purina’s growth strategy has relied on both internal innovation and high-profile acquisitions. The company has expanded its footprint into pet insurance, adoption services like Petfinder, and specialized treat brands such as Zuke’s. Its manufacturing prowess is equally vast, spanning facilities from Russia and Thailand to Italy and the United States. In 2010, the company was recognized for its organizational performance with the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, reflecting a commitment to efficiency and sustainability, including the installation of large-scale solar arrays at its plants.
Despite its success, the company has navigated significant challenges, including fierce competition with Mars Petcare and various legal disputes. It has faced class-action lawsuits regarding ingredient quality and advertising claims, as well as voluntary product recalls due to contamination concerns. Nevertheless, Purina remains a central pillar of Nestlé’s financial health. In fiscal year 2022, the division reported $19.385 billion in revenue, with North America and Europe serving as its largest segments. Under the leadership of Nina Leigh Krueger, the first female CEO for the Americas, the company continues to pivot toward online commerce and sustainable agricultural partnerships.
