How a Seattle metal band navigated decades of lineup shifts and a 2025 rebirth
In short: Formed from the ashes of a defunct group in 1992, Nevermore became a pillar of progressive metal. Despite internal conflicts, health crises, and the tragic loss of their frontman, the band has defied expectations, recently announcing a new lineup and a return to the stage after fifteen years of silence.
The band emerged in 1992 after the dissolution of Sanctuary, a Seattle metal act. Founders Warrel Dane, Jim Sheppard, and Jeff Loomis sought a new direction, eventually recruiting drummer Van Williams in 1994. Their early years were marked by a refusal to conform to the grunge-dominated Seattle scene, leading them to secure a deal with Century Media. Their self-titled debut and subsequent albums, such as 1996's The Politics of Ecstasy, established a complex, technical sound that blended thrash, power, and progressive metal elements.
Throughout their career, the group faced significant instability. Lineup changes were frequent, with various guitarists, including Pat O'Brien and Tim Calvert, contributing to their evolving sound. By the mid-2000s, the members contended with serious health challenges: Dane managed type 2 diabetes, Sheppard battled Crohn's disease for over 15 years, and Steve Smyth required a kidney transplant. These pressures, combined with personal and musical differences, culminated in a hiatus in 2011 following the departure of Loomis and Williams.
The band remained largely dormant until the death of Dane in 2017. However, in December 2024, Loomis and Williams announced a reunion. While the return sparked controversy regarding the use of the band's name without the involvement of the retired Sheppard, the group moved forward. By February 2026, they unveiled a new lineup featuring Berzan Önen, Jack Cattoi, and Semir Özerkan. They marked their return with a performance in Istanbul in April 2026 and confirmed appearances at major festivals like Wacken Open Air and Bloodstock Open Air for the summer of 2026.
