From superstation staple to 24/7 news: the evolution of NewsNation
In short: How does a local Chicago station become a national cable news powerhouse? It took four decades of transformation, shifting from sports and syndicated reruns to a controversial all-news format that traded traditional neutrality for personality-driven opinion and niche interests like UFO coverage.
NewsNation's lineage began on November 9, 1978, as WGN America. Originally established to redistribute the Chicago signal of WGN-TV, it became a national 'superstation.' For decades, it served a broad audience with sports (like Cubs and Bulls games), movies, and syndicated series. However, by December 2014, Tribune converted it into a conventional basic cable network, shifting its focus toward original drama and reality programming to differentiate itself from its local Chicago roots.
The pivot to NewsNation began in late 2019. Nexstar management conducted research showing that many viewers were dissatisfied with the heavy opinion-based formats of CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News. In response, they launched a three-hour prime time newscast in September 2020, aiming for a centrist approach. This strategy faced immediate internal friction; by 2021, several staff members resigned, alleging management was pushing the network toward right-wing politics. The tension peaked when NewsNation hired former Fox News chief Bill Shine as a consultant, leading to the resignation of its news director and managing editor.
Since then, the network has completed a total transition into an 'all-news, talk, and opinion' destination. By April 2023, it moved to a 24-hour weekday schedule, and by June 1, 2024, it achieved a full 24/7 news cycle including weekends. The network has leaned heavily into personality-driven content, hiring figures like Chris Cuomo and former Fox News hosts. It has also carved out unique niches, notably becoming a primary source for UFO coverage—a move described by some as 'normalizing UAPs' in contrast to more skeptical traditional media.
Today, the network operates with resources from over 5,000 journalists across 200 newsrooms. While it maintains ties to its Chicago heritage through occasional sports overflow from The CW, its identity is now defined by a mix of hard news, true crime (via Ashleigh Banfield's digital channel), and high-profile political talk shows.
