From K-pop idol to global fashion icon: the rapid ascent of Ningning
In short: Ningning, the Chinese singer and Aespa member, has evolved from a trainee scouted on a children's singing show into a powerhouse of international brand partnerships. Beyond her musical career, she has become a sought-after face for luxury houses and global labels, navigating both immense fame and public controversy.
Born Ning Yizhuo in Harbin, China, in 2002, Ningning began her professional journey after being scouted by SM Entertainment. Following four years of rigorous training, she debuted as a member of the girl group Aespa in 2020. Her path to stardom was marked by early appearances on Chinese television and a stint in the SM Rookies training team, eventually leading to the group's successful launch with the single Black Mamba.
Her influence extends far beyond the recording studio. By 2024 and 2025, Ningning secured a series of high-profile ambassadorships, ranging from Italian luxury houses like Versace and Gucci to skincare and lifestyle brands such as Maybelline, Dr. Jart+, and Alo. These roles have positioned her as a significant figure in the global fashion and beauty landscape, bridging markets across Asia and the West.
Despite her professional success, Ningning has been open about personal challenges, including a childhood eye surgery that left her with limited vision in one eye and a diagnosis of ADHD. Her career has also faced intense public scrutiny. In late 2025, a social media post featuring a lamp design drew backlash in Japan due to its perceived resemblance to a nuclear mushroom cloud. While the broadcaster NHK eventually defended her against accusations of malice, the incident highlighted the complex pressures of global celebrity, ultimately leading to her withdrawal from a scheduled New Year's Eve performance due to health concerns.
