In short: The University of Mississippi’s athletic identity has undergone a dramatic transformation. Once known as the 'Mississippi Flood,' the school’s various teams have cycled through mascots ranging from the Colonel to a landshark, all while maintaining a fierce competitive presence in the Southeastern Conference.

The athletic history of the University of May Mississippi, based in Oxford, began with the establishment of its football program in 1893. For decades, the school's teams were referred to as the 'Mississippi Flood,' a moniker that lasted until 1936 when the 'Rebels' name was officially adopted. The school's visual identity is also deeply rooted in tradition, utilizing red and navy blue colors specifically chosen to mirror the palettes of Harvard and Yale.

The evolution of the school's mascot reflects changing eras in collegiate culture. The program transitioned from Colonel Reb to the Rebel Black Bear in 2011, and most recently, the mascot was updated to Tony the Landshark in 2018. While most of the 18 intercollegiate teams compete within the NCAA Division I Southeastern Conference (SEC), the rifle team operates independently in the Great America Rifle Conference because the SEC does not sponsor that particular sport.

Beyond the mascot, the program's history is marked by both triumph and controversy. The football program claims three national championships (1959, 1960, and 1962), though the NCAA officially recognizes only the 1960 title. In 2019, the program faced significant sanctions, including a two-year postseason ban and the vacation of 33 victories due to recruiting and academic violations under coaches Houston Nutt and Hugh Freeze. Despite these setbacks, the university continues to produce elite talent, such as basketball star Armintie Price, who achieved rare statistical milestones in the NCAA, and baseball teams that have secured multiple College World Series titles, including a victory in 2022.
