How 543 animated legends returned to life for a single night
In short: When the lights went out at the Roy E. Disney Animation Building, the walls began to move. To celebrate a century of storytelling, Disney animators breathed life into hundreds of characters, blending decades of hand-drawn artistry with modern technology in a cinematic love letter.
Created by directors Dan Abraham and Trent Correy, 'Once Upon a Studio' was developed over approximately eight months as a tribute to the Walt Disney Company's centennial. The short film utilizes a complex hybrid of animation techniques: nearly 80% of the work is hand-drawn using traditional ink and paper, while computer-generated imagery (CGI) is used for modern characters and interactive props like Goofy's camera. This required massive technical reconstruction, as CGI models for characters created before 2010 had to be rebuilt to function with contemporary rendering technology.
The film's narrative centers on characters emerging from production cels and frames to gather for a group photo. It features a staggering 543 characters from the studio's history, spanning from early classics like 'Pinocchio' (1940) to 'Wish' (2023). To maintain emotional authenticity, the production utilized archival recordings for legendary voices that are no longer available, including the Genie's dialogue from unused Robin Williams audio, as well as the voices of Bobby Driscoll and Cliff Edwards.
Beyond the visual spectacle, the film serves as a musical retrospective. The score by Dave Metzger incorporates iconic themes, including a rendition of 'When You Wish Upon a Star' performed by a massive ensemble. The production even featured a new recording of 'Feed the Birds' by Richard M. Sherman, using the same piano used by the Sherman Brothers during their original era at Disney. This meticulous attention to detail ensures that every character, whether hand-drawn or digitally rigged, retains the unique art style of their original debut.
