Operation Praying Mantis: The Largest U.S. Naval Surface Engagement Since World War II
In short: On 18 April 1988, the United States launched a massive retaliatory strike against Iranian naval targets in the Persian Gulf. This intense confrontation, triggered by the mining of a U.S. warship, reshaped regional dynamics and remains the most significant surface combat operation for the U.S. Navy since 1945.
The conflict began after the USS Samuel B. Roberts struck a mine in international waters on 14 April 1988, an event that nearly destroyed the vessel. Following the discovery that the mine's serial numbers matched those seized from an Iranian barge months earlier, U.S. military officials initiated Operation Praying Mantis. The operation involved coordinated strikes by surface action groups and aircraft from the USS Enterprise, targeting Iranian oil platforms, frigates, and fast-attack craft.
During the engagement, U.S. forces utilized anti-ship missiles against opposing vessels for the first time in naval history. The operation resulted in the destruction of two oil platforms and the sinking of several Iranian vessels, including the frigate IRIS Sahand. While the U.S. Navy successfully disabled the frigate IRIS Sabalan, it later adopted a de-escalatory posture to avoid further combat. The only U.S. casualties were two Marine aviators whose helicopter crashed into the Persian Gulf, though the wreckage showed no evidence of enemy fire.
The aftermath of the operation was legally complex. Iran sued the United States for breaching the 1955 Treaty of Amity, but in 2003, the International Court of Justice dismissed the claims. The court ruled that the military actions were not justified as essential security measures, yet it also concluded that the operations did not violate the treaty's specific provisions regarding freedom of commerce. This historical clash underscored the volatile nature of the Tanker War and the fragility of international maritime security during the late 1980s.
