In short: Born Park Yong-kyu, the South Korean actor Park Seo-joon transformed from a shy student overwhelmed by public attention into a global star. After completing his military service to find clarity, he navigated a decade of television and film success, eventually making his Hollywood debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Park Seo-joon, born Park Yong-kyu in 1988, did not initially set out to be a professional actor. His interest in performance began unexpectedly during middle school when he joined an animation club. Participating in an annual stage performance provided him with his first taste of being the center of attention, a pivotal experience that led him to pursue formal training at the Seoul Institute of the Arts.

The path to stardom was not linear. While studying acting, Park found the constant scrutiny and presence of others overwhelming. In 2008, he made the deliberate decision to enlist in the military, viewing it as a necessary period to organize his life and gather his thoughts. He served in the Security Guard Battalion at the Cheongju Correctional Facility, prioritizing his service obligation before launching his professional career in 2011 with a music video appearance.

Park's career gained momentum through a series of supporting roles before his 2015 breakout in dramas like Kill Me, Heal Me. He became a fixture in South Korean media, earning the moniker 'master of romantic comedy' for his performance in the 2018 hit What's Wrong with Secretary Kim. His versatility has since spanned genres, from the historical drama Hwarang to the action-horror film The Divine Fury and the critically acclaimed Parasite. In 2023, he expanded his reach internationally, appearing as Prince Yan of Aladna in the Hollywood superhero film The Marvels.

Beyond his screen work, Park is recognized for his contributions to social causes, including a ₩100 million donation to the Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association following the 2023 Turkey–Syria earthquake. His career continues to evolve, with recent projects including the 2023 disaster-thriller Concrete Utopia and the 2025 romance series Surely Tomorrow, cementing his status as a prominent figure in contemporary entertainment.
