The computer scientist who engineered a fast food empire
In short: Before she was one of America's wealthiest self-made women, Peggy Cherng was coding battlefield simulators for the Air Force. She didn't just help build Panda Express; she used her PhD in electrical engineering to digitize the very mechanics of how a global restaurant chain operates.
Peggy Cherng’s trajectory is defined by a transition from high-level academia to industrial application. Following her 1974 doctoral completion in electrical engineering, she joined McDonnell Douglas as an engineering specialist to develop US Air Force battlefield simulators. This technical foundation proved pivotal when she joined Panda Restaurant Group in 1982. Rather than focusing solely on culinary expansion, Cherng applied her expertise to build the company's internal computer systems, automating inventory tracking and customer feedback loops.
Her leadership style is rooted in engineering principles: standardization through data. By developing sales-tracking and analytics systems for Panda Express, she was able to standardize recipes and operations across a massive footprint. This systematic approach allowed the brand to scale while maintaining consistency. Notably, as of 2018, the Cherngs maintained a rare corporate structure by refusing to franchise most locations or go public, choosing instead to own and operate their restaurants directly. Today, Cherng serves as co-CEO of Panda Express, which operates approximately 2,600 locations. Her influence extends into significant philanthropy and infrastructure; she has donated hundreds of millions to institutions like City of Hope and the California Institute of Technology. From her roots in Myanmar and Hong Kong to her status as a major figure in American business, Cherng represents a unique intersection of advanced computer science and large-scale commercial operations.
Between 1975 and 1977, Cherng served at McDonnell Douglas as a specialist engineer, programming simulators for the US Air Force.
