In short: Aristotle’s followers were known as Peripatetics, named for the 'peripatos'—the covered walkways of the Lyceum. Unlike modern classrooms, these were informal spaces where students and masters walked together to debate the nature of reality, ethics, and the very structure of the physical world.

The Peripatetic school, established in Athens around 335 BC, was defined by its lack of formality. Unlike a modern institution, it had no set curriculum or fees. It was a collaborative space where senior and junior members worked as partners to explore scientific and philosophical theories. The name 'Peripatetic' (meaning 'given to walking') stems from the physical walkways of the Lyceum where these discussions took place.

The school served as a laboratory for Aristotle’s unique brand of inquiry. While his teacher, Plato, pursued a more abstract and utopian philosophy, Aristotle championed a system that was empirical and practical. A central point of divergence was the concept of 'forms.' Plato believed in 'Forms' as perfect, eternal archetypes existing outside of time and space. Aristotle, conversely, argued that forms do not exist independently; a 'substantial' form is what makes a thing what it is (e.g., 'horse' is the substantial form of a horse), while 'accidental' forms are qualities like color that can change without altering the object's essence.

Despite their differences, both schools sought the same ultimate goal: eudaimonia, or human flourishing. They agreed that a good life is achieved through virtue. For Aristotle, the Peripatetic method was a way to investigate these virtues through observation and logic. By walking the grounds of the Lyceum, the Peripatetics moved through the physical world to better understand the logical structures that governed it.
