In short: Petri Hawkins-Byrd served as the iconic, stoic bailiff on Judge Judy for a quarter-century. Beyond his role as the guard dog to a legal pit bull, he navigated a complex professional relationship with Judy Sheindlin, eventually finding himself excluded from her spin-off series despite his historic television tenure.

Born in Brooklyn in 1957, Petri Hawkins-Byrd began his career as a New York court officer in the early 1980s. His path crossed with Judge Judy Sheindlin in 1986 while both worked in the Manhattan family court system. A decade later, after reading about Sheindlin's upcoming television project in a column by Liz Smith, he sent her a letter offering his services. Sheindlin, dissatisfied with the chemistry of her pilot episode's bailiff, hired him immediately.

For 25 seasons, Hawkins-Byrd served as the quintessential courtroom bailiff, managing litigants and providing a menacing presence that reinforced Sheindlin's authority. His role was often limited to nonverbal cues, yet he became a fixture of the show's success, frequently assisting with tasks like looking up vehicle estimates or managing high-tension altercations. The pair maintained a strictly professional dynamic, which Hawkins-Byrd once compared to the relationship between a low-ranking mail clerk and Bill Gates.

The professional partnership ended abruptly in 2021 when Hawkins-Byrd was excluded from Sheindlin's new project, Judy Justice. He later expressed confusion over the decision, noting he was never given the opportunity to discuss salary or terms. Despite the public fallout and his feelings of being sidelined—including his exclusion from presenting Sheindlin's Lifetime Achievement Award—he eventually returned to the court show genre in 2023 as a bailiff for the panel-based series Tribunal Justice.

Outside of the courtroom, Hawkins-Byrd has pursued a diverse career as an actor, voice actor, and community activist. He serves as the national chairman of the O.K. Program, which supports young black men, and operates a nonprofit mentoring initiative called Teach Them to Fish. He also co-hosts a web series with his wife, Makita Bond, and continues to write poetry and screenplays, maintaining a creative life far removed from the scripted drama of daytime television.
