The jazz musician who turned saxophone notes into spiritual devotion
In short: Pharoah Sanders transformed the saxophone into a vessel for spiritual devotion by pioneering a meditative, avant-garde style. Beyond his technical mastery of multiphonic sounds, he merged religious concepts like karma with free jazz, creating a mystical performance aesthetic that blurred the boundaries between musical expression and deep religious practice.
Pharoah Sanders was a pivotal figure in the development of free jazz and spiritual jazz, particularly through his association with John Coltrane in the mid-1960s. His signature style involved overblowing, multiphonic techniques, and "sheets of sound," creating a rich, meditative aesthetic. By drawing upon theological ideas like tawhid and karma, he framed his sound as a mystical extension of the spiritual jazz pioneered by Coltrane in works like A Love Supreme.
Sanders' journey to this avant-garde peak was marked by significant hardship and mentorship. Born Ferrell Lee Sanders in 1940, he was an only child who began his musical life accompanying church hymns on clarinet. After moving to New York City in 1962, he faced periods of homelessness until the composer Sun Ra provided him with housing and clothes, even encouraging him to adopt the name "Pharoah." It was only upon joining the New York musicians' union that Sanders officially chose the name for his professional career.
His career trajectory saw a shift from the experimental to the diverse. While he achieved significant commercial and critical success with the Impulse! label in the late 1960s and early 1970s—producing notable works like "The Creator Has a Master Plan"—his sound eventually broadened. By the late 1970s and 1980s, he explored R&B, modal jazz, and hard bop. Even in his final years, he remained a master of the craft, recording a "late-career masterpiece" with the London Symphony Orchestra in 2021 before his death in 2022.
