The most exclusive golf course in the world is a 'folly' of obsession
In short: Pine Valley Golf Club is so private that its membership list is a closely guarded secret. Built on a site so challenging it was once mocked as a fool's errand, it remains a fortress of high-society golf where the public is only allowed entry once a year.
Founded in 1913 by Philadelphia amateurs, Pine Valley was the singular obsession of George Arthur Crump. He was so committed to the project that he sold his Philadelphia hotel to fund the construction. The work was grueling: laborers had to drain marshlands and remove 22,000 tree stumps using steam-winches and horse-drawn cables. Because this level of earth-moving was rare for the era, critics initially derided the project as 'Crump's Folly.'
Crump established rigid, idiosyncratic design principles to ensure a unique experience. Crump dictated that holes must not align with their neighbours, limited consecutive shots to two in a single heading, and ensured golfers could only view their current hole. He also required the layout to be difficult enough that a golfer would need to use every club in their bag. To achieve this, Crump collaborated with legendary architects like A.W. Tillinghast and Walter Travis, making it his only and most significant design.
The club's exclusivity is legendary. With about 930 members worldwide, access is strictly by invitation from the board of directors. While it hosted the Walker Cup in 1936 and 1985, it remains largely closed to the public. A notable exception occurs every September during the Crump Cup; on the final day, the public can tour the grounds via school bus, provided they leave all cameras and phones behind. The club also faced significant scrutiny for its historical gender restrictions, reaching a settlement in 2023 to end discriminatory practices and fund scholarships for women in golf.
