In short: When Earth's heroes decide the Hulk is too dangerous to remain, they exile him to space. Instead of a peaceful world, he crashes on Sakaar, a planet where he is forced into brutal gladiator combat. This epic saga reimagines the Hulk as a reluctant warrior, king, and revolutionary leader.

The Planet Hulk storyline, which began in 2006, originated from a concept by Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada. Writer Greg Pak was tasked with building the world of Sakaar, drawing heavily from historical figures like Genghis Khan and the harsh realities of ancient Roman gladiators. Pak also integrated philosophical frameworks, including Sun Tzu’s The Art of War and Joseph Campbell’s The Power of Myth, to structure the Hulk’s transformation from a captive fighter to a revolutionary figure.

The narrative begins when the Illuminati, fearing the Hulk’s destructive potential after a Gamma bomb incident in Las Vegas, trick him into leaving Earth. A wormhole redirects his shuttle to Sakaar, where he is fitted with an obedience disk and enslaved by the Red King. Hulk forms a pact with fellow gladiators known as the Warbound. His popularity in the arena grows, eventually leading to a rebellion against the Red King’s tyranny after the king deploys monstrous spikes that mutate and kill the planet's inhabitants.

Following the Red King's defeat, the Hulk is crowned king and marries Caiera. However, the peace is short-lived; the shuttle that brought him to Sakaar self-destructs, killing Caiera and destroying the capital. Driven by grief and rage, the Hulk returns to Earth to seek vengeance against the heroes who exiled him, a conflict chronicled in the sequel, World War Hulk. The story has since been adapted into an animated film and influenced the live-action movie Thor: Ragnarok, cementing its status as a pivotal chapter in Marvel lore.
