The unprecedented global scale of a monarch's 70th anniversary
In short: In 2022, the world paused to mark a milestone never before seen in British history. From the lighting of beacons in every Commonwealth capital to massive economic shifts, the Platinum Jubilee was more than a royal party—it was a complex global event with significant financial consequences.
The Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 7/0th anniversary of accession, a milestone dating back to 6 February 1952. It was a unique moment in the history of the British monarchy and the Commonwealth realms, as no other monarch had ever reached a platinum milestone. The celebrations were truly international, with official initiatives launched by nations such as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, alongside territories like Gibraltar. Even global leaders from the United States, China, and Germany sent messages of congratulations.
While the festivities were grand, they carried a heavy economic weight. The UK government allocated £28 million to fund the celebrations, yet an impact assessment from August 2021 suggested that the extra bank holidays could lead to a £2.39 billion decrease in GDP due to business closures. Conversely, there were high expectations for a £1.2 billion boost to the UK economy. Retail trends during the period were mixed; while overall retail sales saw a slight 0.1% dip in June, the food sector experienced a notable 3.1% spike in sales volumes.
The jubilee also left a lasting physical legacy. Through the Queen's Green Canopy campaign, which launched in May 2021, over one million trees were planted by March 2022. This effort was physically represented by the 'Tree of Trees' sculpture outside Buckingham Palace—a 70-foot structure containing 350 native British trees. Sadly, the year of celebration also marked the end of an era, as the Queen passed away on 8 September 202 moving into her 96th year.
