Why a tiny, restricted island in New York became a pop culture obsession
In short: Plum Island is a high-security federal site that has hosted animal disease research since 1954. While restricted to the public, its mysterious reputation has made it a frequent setting for thrillers, horror stories, and conspiracy theories, transforming a quiet research facility into a permanent fixture of the American cultural imagination.
Located off the North Fork of Long Island, Plum Island has a history that spans from its 1659 purchase for a coat and fishhooks to its role as a Cold War-era military site. In 1954, the U.S. Department of Agriculture established the Plum Island Animal Disease Center to protect the national food supply from transboundary animal pathogens. Because of the nature of this work, the island remains under strict control by the Department of Homeland Security, which assumed ownership in 2003.
The island's isolation and secretive mission have fueled intense public fascination. It has appeared in numerous works of fiction, including Thomas Harris's 1988 novel The Silence of the Lambs, where it is derisively called Anthrax Island. Other portrayals range from the 2004 investigative book Lab 257 to appearances in television series like American Horror Story and What We Do in the Shadows. These depictions often lean into themes of government conspiracies, biological disasters, and hidden experiments, far removed from the actual scientific mission of the facility.
The island's future has been a subject of intense political debate. In 2008, legislation was passed to sell the island to fund a new facility in Kansas, but the plan faced years of opposition from environmental groups and local politicians. By 2020, Congress moved to block the sale entirely, opting to preserve the island instead. Following the cessation of research in September 2025, the Plum Island Closure and Support Program began the complex process of decommissioning and decontaminating the site to eventually divest the federal government of its ownership.
