How a small California college became an architectural and academic powerhouse in the desert
In short: Founded in 1887 to recreate New England-style education in Southern California, Pomona College has evolved into a wealthy, prestigious liberal arts institution. With a multi-billion dollar endowment and a unique consortium model, it balances intimate undergraduate learning with the resources of a much larger university system.
Established by Congregationalists during a regional real estate boom, Pomona College began in a rental house before settling in Claremont. Its trajectory shifted dramatically in 1925 when President James A. Blaisdell founded the Claremont Colleges consortium. Inspired by the collegiate university model at Oxford, this arrangement allows Pomona to maintain its identity as a small, selective undergraduate institution while sharing centralized resources like the Honnold/Mudd Library, which holds over 3.4 million items.
The campus itself is a testament to deliberate design. Guided by master plans from architect Myron Hunt and landscape architect Ralph Cornell, the grounds are envisioned as a 'college in a garden.' This aesthetic blends Mission Revival and Spanish Colonial architecture with diverse global influences. The 140-acre site features notable landmarks like the Benton Museum of Art, which houses 20,000 items, and the Frary Dining Hall, home to the first Mexican fresco in the United States, Prometheus, painted by José Clemente Orozco in 1930.
Financially, the college is exceptionally robust, holding a $3.01 billion endowment as of June 2024. This wealth supports a commitment to meeting the full demonstrated financial need of all admitted students through grants rather than loans. Despite its stability, the college has navigated significant internal and external pressures, from student-led protests regarding divestment and social justice to the 2011 firing of dining hall workers that drew national attention. Today, under the leadership of G. Gabrielle Starr, the college continues to emphasize its liberal arts curriculum while managing the complexities of its role within the 7Cs consortium.
