In short: During World War II, the US military released a secret series of cartoons featuring Private Snafu. An incredibly bungling soldier, Snafu's disastrous mistakes served a vital purpose: teaching enlisted men about security, sanitation, and military protocols through the power of animation.

Produced between 1943 and 1945 by the First Motion Picture Unit, the Private Snafu series was designed to educate soldiers with varying literacy levels. The character's name is a play on the military acronym SNAFU, meaning "Situation Normal: All Fouled Up." To ensure the lessons stuck, the shorts used simple language, mild profanity, and risqué imagery that bypassed the standard Motion Picture Production Code.

The production was highly secretive. Because the films were classified government documents, staff at the ink and paint department had to undergo FBI security clearances and wear identification badges. To prevent workers from learning the plot, they were often restricted to handling only ten animation cels at a time. Despite these restrictions, the shorts were immensely popular, frequently ranking as the highest or second-highest rated films among soldiers.

A varied group of creators worked on the series, led by director Frank Capra. The writing staff included Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel, Philip D. Eastman, and also Munro Leaf. Interestingly, Leon Schlesinger Productions won the contract to produce the shorts after underbidding Walt Disney Productions by two-thirds. The animation was primarily handled by Warner Bros. Cartoons, and the character's voice was provided by Mel Blanc, whose delivery closely resembled Bugs Bunny.

Snafu's misadventures often ended in literal disaster. In six specific shorts—including 'Spies,' 'Booby Traps,' 'The Goldbrick,' 'A Lecture on Camouflage,' 'Private Snafu vs. Malaria Mike,' and 'Going Home'—the character is killed due to his own stupidity. These dark, humorous lessons were intended to demonstrate the lethal consequences of neglecting military protocols, such as failing to use malaria medication or leaking classified information.
