In short: The Q subway service is a chameleon of the New York City transit system. Originally a steam railroad in 1878, it has since worn orange and yellow bullets, operated as both local and express, and traversed nearly every major bridge and tunnel connection in the city's complex B Division network.

The origins of the Q trace back to the Brooklyn, Flatbush and Coney Island Railway, which began steam-powered operations in 1878. By 1920, the line was integrated into the Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation (BMT) subway network. Throughout the 20th century, the service underwent constant reconfiguration. It has been known by various designations, including the QB and QT, and has frequently swapped routes to accommodate massive infrastructure projects like the Manhattan Bridge reconstruction, which spanned from 1986 to 2004.

Service patterns for the Q have been defined by the city's shifting engineering needs. Between 1988 and 2001, the Q operated along the IND Sixth Avenue Line, sporting an orange bullet on maps. During other periods, it was a Broadway Express service, marked by a yellow bullet. The line has also experimented with specialized variants, such as the diamond-bulleted <Q> express, which operated between 2001 and 2004 to maintain Brighton Line express service while the Manhattan Bridge underwent repairs.

The Q's route has been equally fluid. It has served Queens via the Astoria Line and the IND Queens Boulevard Line, and at various times, it has been extended or truncated based on tunnel availability and construction demands. A significant milestone occurred on January 1, 2017, when the service was rerouted to the newly opened Second Avenue Subway. Today, the Q provides 24-hour service between 96th Street in Manhattan and Stillwell Avenue in Coney Island, maintaining its role as a vital artery in the New York City Subway.
