A massive new fleet could transform the New York City Subway's A Division
In short: The MTA is planning the largest rolling stock contract in its history. The proposed R262 subway cars aim to replace aging models with high-tech features like open gangways and advanced communication systems, potentially refreshing over 35% of the existing A Division fleet.
The R262 is a proposed New Technology Train-series designed for the New York City Subway's A Division. If the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) exercises all contract options, the order could reach 2,390 cars. This represents the MTA's biggest rolling stock deal to date, swapping out over 35% of existing A Division stock, including R62, R62A, R142, and R142A models.
The order is structured into a base order of 1,140 cars and an option order of 1,250 cars. While the base order is included in the MTA's 2025–2029 Capital Program, the option order would require funding from a future capital plan. These cars will likely measure 51.2 feet in length and will be organized into 5-car sets for the 42nd Street Shuttle and the mainline IRT.
Technologically, the R262s will feature modern amenities such as an Ethernet network, LED headlights, and communications-based train control (CBTC). A notable variant, the R262OG, will feature open-gangways, allowing passengers to move between cars while the train is in motion. The new fleet targets much better reliability; it requires a 200,000-mile Mean Distance Between Failure (MDBF), whereas R62/R62A trains average only 89,000 miles.
The project has faced several shifts. Post-COVID-19 pandemic labour and supply chain difficulties led the MTA to suggest postponing funding in July 2022. By March 2026, the MTA issued a request for proposals (RFP) that updated the order, expanding the option order to 1,250 cars. The award for this contract should occur during early 2028.
