How a ₹5,000 investment grew into India's most legendary multi-billion dollar stock market fortune
In short: Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, often called the Big Bull of India, transformed a modest starting capital into a US$5.8 billion empire. By betting on India's rising consumer class and identifying growth sectors early, he became a titan of industry, leaving behind a legacy that spans aviation, education, and massive philanthropic commitments.
Born in 1960, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala began his journey as a Chartered Accountant with a keen interest in the markets, sparked by listening to his father's discussions. He started his investment career in 1985 with just ₹5,000. By 1986, he secured his first major profit of ₹5 lakh, and between 1986 and 1989, he generated profits totaling up to ₹25 lakh. His strategy relied on identifying potential in consumer-driven sectors like retail and technology, betting that India's expanding middle class would drive domestic consumption.
His portfolio grew significantly over decades, with his investment value reaching ₹11,000 crores by 2022. Among his most notable holdings was Titan Company, which accounted for ₹7,294.8 crore as of 2021. Beyond passive investing, he was an active corporate leader, serving as chairman of Aptech and Hungama Digital Media Entertainment, and co-founding Akasa Air in 2021. His influence was so pervasive that he was often compared to Warren Buffett and even inspired a character in the web series Scam 1992.
Despite his success, his career was not without controversy. In 2021, he settled an insider trading investigation with the Securities and Exchange Board of India regarding shares of Aptech, paying ₹18.5 crore as part of a collective ₹35 crore settlement. Before his death on 14 August 2022, he planned to donate 25% of his wealth to charity, supporting causes ranging from healthcare to education. His wife, Rekha Jhunjhunwala, continues his legacy, ranking among India's wealthiest individuals with a net worth of $9.3 billion as of October 2024.
His life was marked by both professional intensity and personal milestones, including the construction of a massive 13-storey home in Mumbai. Posthumously, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 2023. His death, caused by kidney-related issues and multiple organ failure, prompted tributes from national leaders, cementing his status as an indelible figure in the history of Indian finance.
