How a last-minute miracle in Paris defined the legacy of Real Zaragoza
In short: Founded in 1932, Real Zaragoza has long been a fixture of Spanish football. While the club boasts six domestic cup victories, its most iconic moment remains the 1995 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final, where a stunning long-range strike in the final seconds of extra time secured a historic European trophy.
Real Zaragoza was established on 18 March 1932, emerging from the merger of two local rivals, Iberia SC and Real Zaragoza CD. The club spent the vast majority of its history competing in the top tier of Spanish football, La Liga. During the 1960s, the team earned the nickname Los Magníficos, a period marked by consistent top-five finishes and the acquisition of their first major silverware, including the 1963–64 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and two domestic cup titles.
The club's most celebrated international achievement occurred on 10 May 1995 at the Parc des Princes in Paris. Facing Arsenal in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final, the match remained deadlocked at 1–1 as it entered the final moments of extra time. In the 120th minute, Nayim struck a remarkable half-volley from beyond the halfway line, looping the ball over goalkeeper David Seaman to clinch a 2–1 victory. This triumph remains a defining chapter in the club's history, standing alongside their six total Copa del Rey titles.
Despite these peaks, the club has faced significant volatility. After a period of instability in the 2000s, which included multiple relegations and changes in ownership, the club has struggled to regain its former status. By 2022, an international investment fund led by Jorge Mas acquired a majority stake in the club. Following years of decline, the team was relegated to the third division in the 2025–26 season, marking a historic low point for a club that once stood as the seventh-most supported team in Spain.
