In short: Formed in 1970, the Red Hand Commando operated as a shadowy, highly selective loyalist paramilitary force in Northern Ireland. Despite its violent campaign against Irish republicanism, the group remained an enigma, uniquely adopting an Irish language motto while maintaining deep, operational ties to the larger Ulster Volunteer Force.

The Red Hand Commando (RHC) emerged in June 1970 within the Shankill area of west Belfast. Founded by figures including Ronnie McCullough and William Smith, the group was designed to combat Irish republicanism and preserve Northern Ireland's status within the United Kingdom. By 1972, the RHC became an integral satellite of the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), sharing weapons and personnel while retaining its own distinct structure. It was officially proscribed by the British government in November 1973.

The group was known for its secrecy and opaque organization, which helped it avoid the heavy informant penetration that plagued other paramilitary factions during the early 1980s. Its membership, initially composed of Protestant youths, was concentrated in areas like east Belfast, Sandy Row, and Newtownabbey, with a presence extending into County Down and Fermanagh. While the Sutton database attributes 13 deaths to the RHC, other estimates suggest the group may have been responsible for at least 40 fatalities during its campaign.

The RHC's operational history was marked by drive-by shootings and no-warning bombings, including a spree in July 1974 that targeted 14 Catholic-owned pubs in 14 days. Beyond its violent activities, the group underwent a political evolution; senior members were instrumental in forming the Progressive Unionist Party in 1979. This shift began within the compounds of Long Kesh, where members sought a new political direction. By 2017, the organization had transitioned, with its remaining membership of a few hundred individuals focusing primarily on community work.
