In short: Researchers have developed the Scheme for Educational Dialogue Analysis (SEDA), a new tool designed to systematically study classroom talk. By testing the framework on video recordings from classrooms in the UK and Mexico, the team found that analyzing individual 'communicative acts' and grouping them by function effectively highlights patterns in educational dialogue.

The study aimed to create a practical way to represent productive forms of educational dialogue by drawing on sociocultural theory and the importance of context. The researchers tested the scheme across various ages, subjects, and interaction types, such as group and paired work.

While the 33 resulting codes helped identify dialogic sequences, the researchers reflected on the scheme's limitations regarding its fitness for purpose in all contexts.

Why it matters: A new systematic framework allows for the standardized analysis of classroom interactions across different cultures and subjects.
