Is RT a legitimate global news network or a state-run information warfare machine?
In short: Founded in 2005 to reshape Russia's international image, RT evolved from a niche broadcaster into a massive, multilingual media operation. While it claims to offer a counter-hegemonic perspective, critics and regulators worldwide have labeled it a propaganda outlet, leading to widespread bans and intense scrutiny of its editorial independence.
Launched as Russia Today in December 2005, the network was the brainchild of Mikhail Lesin and Aleksei Gromov. Its stated mission was to move beyond Western stereotypes of Russia—specifically communism, snow, and poverty—by providing a more complete picture of the country. By 2010, the network had expanded its staff to 2,000 employees. In 2009, it rebranded as RT, a move academics suggested was an attempt to distance the brand from its explicit state affiliation, despite remaining funded by the Russian government through the Federal Agency for Press and Mass Media.
The network’s editorial stance has frequently sparked international conflict. Editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan, appointed at age 25, famously compared the channel to the Russian Ministry of Defence, describing its work as an information war against the Western world. Throughout its history, RT has been accused of broadcasting disinformation and conspiracy theories. UK regulator Ofcom has repeatedly found the network in breach of impartiality rules, and in 2017, RT America was forced to register as a foreign agent under the U.S. Foreign Agents Registration Act.
The network's trajectory shifted dramatically following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The European Union, Canada, and various social media platforms implemented sweeping bans, citing the network's role in spreading false narratives, such as claims of genocide in the Donbas region. Despite these restrictions, RT has continued to expand into new markets, including the launch of RT Hindi and RT Balkan in 2022, and an online platform in Portuguese in 2023. While Western platforms have largely de-platformed the network, its influence persists in other regions, with research indicating that global viewer trust in the brand has shown significant growth in recent years.
