From Page 3 icon to pop star: the complex trajectory of Samantha Fox
In short: Samantha Fox rose to fame as a teenage glamour model in the 1980s before pivoting to a successful international pop career. Her journey spans chart-topping hits, a tumultuous relationship with her father, and a public evolution of her personal identity, marking her as a defining figure of the decade.
Born in 1966, Samantha Fox began her career as a glamour model at 16 after placing second in a Sunday People contest. Recruited by The Sun for its Page 3 feature, she became a ubiquitous sex symbol of the 1980s, eventually being voted the top Page 3 model of all time in 2008. Despite her immense popularity, she left the role at 20 to pursue music, a transition that proved remarkably successful.
Her 1986 debut single, "Touch Me (I Want Your Body)," became a global hit, reaching the top 10 across North America, Europe, and Australia. While her early music career was defined by chart success and a Brit Award nomination in 1988, her personal life faced significant strain. In 1991, she discovered that her father, who managed her career, had embezzled over £1 million from her earnings, leading to a legal battle that resulted in a £363,000 settlement. This period was marked by family estrangement and the eventual death of her father in 2000.
Fox’s public life has also been defined by her evolving identity. After years of speculation, she came out as a lesbian in 2003, later revealing she had understood her orientation in her mid-20s but feared the reaction of fans. She maintained a long-term partnership with her manager Myra Stratton until Stratton's death in 2015. In 2022, Fox married her tour manager, Linda Birgitte Olsen. Her career has continued through reality television, touring, and recent legal challenges, including a 2024 conviction for drunk and disorderly conduct on a flight, underscoring the persistent public scrutiny that has followed her since her teenage years.
