From animated teen to medical drama staple: the versatile career of Sarah Drew
In short: Sarah Drew has navigated a diverse path through American television, moving from voicing a cynical teenager in Daria to portraying the resilient Dr. April Kepner on Grey's Anatomy. Beyond her iconic medical role, her career spans Broadway, Hallmark mysteries, and portrayals of historical figures like Lucille Ball in radio theater.
Born in 1980 in Stony Brook, New York, Sarah Drew grew up in a household deeply connected to education and ministry. Her mother taught biology, while her father served as a senior pastor. This academic and community-focused upbringing preceded her formal training at the University of Virginia, where she earned a degree in drama in 2002. Her professional trajectory began early; she was still in high school when she landed the voice role of Stacy Rowe in the animated series Daria, a character she continued to play in subsequent television films.
Drew's transition to live-action performance included a 2001 stage debut as Juliet in Princeton and a 2003 Broadway appearance in Vincent in Brixton. Her television breakthrough arrived with the family drama Everwood, where she starred as Hannah Rogers from 2004 to 2006. However, her most significant television tenure began in 2009 when she joined Grey's Anatomy. Initially cast as a resident from the rival Mercy West Hospital, her character, Dr. April Kepner, became a series regular by 2010. Her departure in 2018, described by showrunner Krista Vernoff as a creative decision rather than a budgetary one, was followed by brief returns to the show in 2021 and 2022.
Outside of her medical drama fame, Drew has maintained a varied portfolio. She has starred in Hallmark films, appeared in the AMC series Mad Men, and taken on the role of Lucille Ball in an L.A. Theatre Works production about the making of I Love Lucy. Despite several pilot projects for CBS that did not move forward, including a Cagney & Lacey reboot and The Republic of Sarah, she has remained active in diverse projects, from the Freeform series Cruel Summer to the 2024 Hallmark mystery series Mistletoe Murders. Drew, who is Christian, has been married to Dartmouth lecturer Peter Lanfer since 2002, and the couple has two children.
