Why losing a single language is a form of cultural inbreeding
In short: When a language vanishes, we lose more than just words; we lose unique ways of perceiving reality. Dr. Greg Anderson argues that linguistic homogenization stunts human evolution, stripping away the essential diversity required for our species to truly advance and thrive.
Linguist Dr. Greg Anderson, the founder of Living Tongues, views the preservation of endangered languages as a biological necessity for human progress. He posits that human evolution thrives on addition rather than subtraction. When we attempt to homogenize humanity by erasing linguistic diversity, we risk a state of 'cultural insing,' a process he compares to the dangers of genetic inbreeding that can lead to extinction.
The loss of a language represents a permanent reduction in the human cognitive palette. To illustrate this, Anderson points to the vast semantic range found in ancient tongues. While English possesses only one primary word for 'love,' Sanskrit contains 96 distinct terms for the concept. If Sanskrit were to disappear, the collective human ability to communicate nuanced emotion would lose 96 unique 'colors' from its communicative repertoire.
Dr. Anderson's extensive fieldwork spans the globe, focusing on the complex linguistic landscapes of Siberia and tribal India. His research includes the Altai Sayan group, Munda languages, and various Tibeto-Burman languages in Arunachal Pradesh. His studies have also taken him to Nigeria, Bolivia, Paraguay, Papua New Guinea, Chile, and Oregon, documenting the intricate morphological and grammatical structures of many different language families.
The mission behind this work is to protect the 'tapestry of the human animal.' By maintaining a wide array of languages, we ensure that the imagery used to communicate our shared experiences remains vivid and rich, preventing the stagnation that occurs when our collective vocabulary is narrowed.
